Concrete cover: standards and choosing spacers

Concrete cover protects rebar from corrosion and ensures the durability of the structure. We look at the standards and how to choose spacers correctly.

Why concrete cover matters

Concrete cover is the distance from the concrete surface to the rebar. It protects the steel from corrosion and fire and ensures bond between rebar and concrete. Too little cover leads to rebar rusting and structural failure; too much wastes concrete and reduces load capacity.

What thickness is needed

The thickness depends on the structure type and service conditions (per SP 63.13330). Guidelines:

How to choose a spacer

A spacer is chosen by three parameters: the required cover, the rebar diameter and the plane (horizontal or vertical).
